In my recent talk at the Academy General Meeting I told about the discovery of a large number of galaxies with abnormal bright ultraviolet part of the spectrum. After the discoverer, Academician of the Armenian NAS B.E.Markarian, they got the name Markarian galaxies. It appeared that two types of galaxies have ultraviolet excess: galaxies with especially active nuclei, very similar to quasi-stellar objects and galaxies containing very high percent of hot stars. Both types of galaxies, nearly in equal numbers, are present in Markarian lists and are similarly interesting for understanding of problems of evolution of galaxies.

The discovery of Markarian galaxies is a great achievement of our science.
